Abstract: This paper proposed an adaptive hybrid forward error correction (FEC)/automatic repeat request (ARQ) algorithm at the data link layer for wireless media streaming,in the hope that the media could make receivers to get high quality media streaming. The algorithm, based on cross-layer optimisation design, predicts the packet loss rate using the Kalman filter, and adjusts the FEC parameter N and the ARQ parameter Nmax ; On the other hand, we used an adaptive FEC at the application layer to adjust the sending rate of MPEG video frame adaptively and allocate the network bandwidth resource between the MPEG video source data and the redundant data dynamically. Both the mathematical analysis and simulation demonstrate that the proposed mechanism can significantly improve duality of media streaming, in terms of playable frame rate, reliability and real-time performance on the receiving side.
